The Backward Step

It’s good to be up early in Logan Park, West Virginia. One can watch the thick fog move into the park. A peak in the park across the fog catches a touch of the sun’s golden light. The photo peaks into the valley through the frame of trees on both sides. There is a sense that the photographer has been offered a special look at the world through the “outstretched” arms of the trees. At a special time.

The Parkway Logan, West Virginia Early evening 5/5/25
One of those little places travelers rush by but locals love. Where the staff has been there for 30 years or so and they make the best breakfast “specials” anywhere. My good friend Rich travels around the nation as an insurance adjuster and always hunts out places like this. One of those places that bring back an older America.

Descending to magical Logan Park in West Virginia in the early morning. The clouds still hang over the park. The little road goes through woods and into a dark tunnel into the park.

NOTES
My good friend Richard travels around the country in the disaster services industry, chasing tragedies like fires, floods, wind damage to homes and businesses. He has even been out to Paradise, California after their horrible tragedy. Mixed with the scene of tragedies he travels to is his love of the old, America, off the fast highways of today. Tragic scenes involved with his business but a chance to see America in its out of the way places as he travels to various locations.
Rich plans his trips well and makes sure he has some of his out of the way places on his stop-bys. We’ve featured some of Rich’s great work in a former post and happy to do so again. As he has progressed in his career and travels for his work, he has gotten better and better at getting photos few of us would get today. Off the beaten path. Many of the place and moods Rich captures seem memories of a past America, maybe places along a ghost Route 66.
One his finest collections of photos is from his recent adjustment work near Logan Park, West Virginia. Before his day of work he arrived the previous night and got up early before going to work to take the photos you see. The Parkway is a famous old restaurant in town. The exact kind of place Rich searches out in his travels.
