One of Columbus’ Best Nursuries for Small Plants

I live in New Albany, Ohio between two great greenhouses. One is a large, full spectrum plant and tree nursery called Oakland in New Albany and the other is the smaller LettuceWork Nursery just north of New Albany. My wife and I have shopped at both and in fact have had Oakland deliver a number of bushes for our backyard and have used their consulting services. Very satistied with them.
But for a different and more focsed attention on small plants, at the top of bloom, it is worth a drive ten minutes north of New Albany to LettuceWork.
A huge selection this year
Over the years, I’ve watched my brother-in-law Doug and his wife Julie grow their business LettuceWork. Inspired by the autism of one of their sons, the word LettuceWork was something that Doug and Julie made up meaning “Let us work” as it applied to the original purpose of LettuceWork as helping autistic children from high school transition into the of work and ultimately move towards more independence in their life. Julie has worked as a teacher at one of the largest schools for autistic children in Columbus.
The first few years, lettuce was produced and distributed around central Ohio to various markets. No Internet marketing or distribution. All sold in retail markets. The business of growing lettuce was much more limited and intensely fought than they suspected. The board of LettuceWork (which I was on) agreed with Doug that a change from the produce of lettuce into the flower market made sense and the non-profit changed from producing lettuce to flowers and plants. Yet still working to provide opporitunities for adults with autism.

Today, a day before Mothers Day, my wife and I went out to LettuceWork to buy some flowers. The boxwood plant on the porch was gone beyond any hope and Steph was determined to put something new in its place.
I was impressed at the size of the crowd. Cars filled the large parking lot. I’ve never seen it so crowded. After spending an hour inside, I concluded I’ve never seen LettuceWork look so good. The selection of flowers and plants was far greater than I’ve seen it before. The quality of the products were fresh and in full bloom.
Doug and Julie’s LettuceWork LettuceWork has become one of the the best small plant nurseries in Columbus. And for such a good cause.
