Eric Church ‘ UNC Chapel Hill / 2026 Commencement Speech

“The world does not need another cover song. It needs an original.” Eric Church speech at UNC

John Fraim

Thanks to my brother for introducing me to Eric Church. He provided the above video to me. Not knowing anything about Eric Church, I was free to just evaluate the video. The speech starts with the powerful voice of Church – sure, positive. He stands on stage with the UNC faculty behind him. In the football stadium with the 2026 graduating class.

Church has his guitar strapped around him. He says that he is going to compare the six pillars of life to the six key strings on a guitar. He begins his hybrid talk/performance about these six pillars.

No ever listening to or hearing about Church, I was free of all pre-formed thoughts about him. Here, giving one of the most powerful and useful commencement addresses I’ve ever heard. A combination Dale Carnegie and Bob Dylan. A true believer and preacher who connects his preaching to music. The idea that music (and its six key strings on a guitar) relate to life. Church begins describing the six strings of the guitar. The six pillars of life, Church says, are behind these.

His six pillars are powerful and well-thought out. His commencement address offers a theatical experience as Church takes us through the challenges of life. Symbolized by the six key strings of a guitar. He tells this ontage to the stadium full of UNC graduates. Drone shots of the event above the football stadim. A mass of light blue and white.

These seem to be incredible things communicated to the graduating class. They feel much of it now. They will know it later by YouTube. The camera swings over thousands of students, all cheering, very much behind the address Church is currenly giving. The explanation will most likely be viewed many times on YouTube. Whether it receives the “views” it deserves is of course problemantical (as it always is).

It speaks for iself. An 18-minute commencement address to a sea of blue and white students. All starting out in life. On that particular “genre” between speech and literature called “commencement addresses.” These are usually the symbols that the senior class at a college/university want to speak at their commencement to express or embody the general concerns of the senior or graduating class. The seniors have much pull over who they want and their choices don’t always match with those of the colleges development/alumni offices.

Here, the choice of the students for someone to represent their general thoughts is Eric Church in 2026. I don’t know much about him but I would classify him in the cattegory of Gospel C&W music. If in fact, there is one. That particular genre is how I would define it after just a few listenings. Yet it would be a mistake to categoriz Church’s music into any particular genre. A true musical artist (and preacher in many ways) crosses genres or collapses them.

A powerful voice in music today. A powerful voice altogether today. No matter what genre of music one prefers. Here, an arist that makes one forget about genres. In favor of a new unity.

A recharge in music today. In passion.
