Today, one can take time to meticulously investigate the events of the world. As a famous philosopher once said, an unexamined life is not worth living. However, he was living a few thousand years ago. Fame and historical relevance is something that seems to come and go with the whims of the period (of historians).
On the other hand, the amount of time modern society has to reflect upon the world seems to increasingly diminish. Reflection is now associated with somehow missing the strobe-like flash of news each day. What’s going on in the present. Getting off the main thoroughfare of life into some backwater. Missing out on the news (new) of life.
In effect, one feels somewhat out of it to spend time thinking and reflecting about life when so much news is happening each day. Refletion = Mssing the new(s) of the day.
That’s why I’ve often captured images and writing out there that wraps up a lot of reflection in a small package, allowing me to move on to other things. But also, leading me to the source of the article. Perhaps the type of stuff worth spending a little time reflecting on. Another one of those articles that claims so much and argues it so well.
The below post by Gary Marcus from his substack I’m on. Great insights about culture. One of my favorites.
Below his article, the paper it is based on.
The source of what “everyone is talking about today” as Marcus notes in his article.
Always so good giving one access to “source materials” or what everyone is interpreting for us all in this era of mediated (fake) news.
