One of my grand memories is my Los Angeles childhood is my father taking movies of our family at all those special events of a year. He had a 16 mm camera and the lights around it were hot enough to send you to the emergency room. On birthday parties he wanted all of us kids to stare at the camera and wave. But this was never accomplished as the lights were blindingly bright and staring at them for any amount of time seemed the path to blindness. Us kids tried to shield oursleves from the brilliant lights of the video lights.
If only my father was alive in today’s world of camera’s like the DJI Osmo Pocket Three. (Pocket Four to soon be released). He loved the latest in camera technology and would be amazed at what’s this video camera does. A vlog is a journal-style video that captures the story of an individual. Most of the following simply picked up online. Usually, it is embedded with supporting elements, which include text, images, and other metadata. Vlogging enables one to express themselves in the most candid manner. It’s easier for influencers to share their lives, thoughts, experiences, and journey. (all quoted from Wikipedia). Vloggers are enthusiastic, passionate people who candidly share their day-to-day lives, activities, and interests. The vlogger seems to be perhaps the major market for quasi action cameras that are perfect for immediately sharing one’s thoughts. No preparation needed.
The beauty of the DJI Pocket Three for vloggers is that it is focused on the vlogger’s face. And records great audio and even better with the DJI mini-microphones.
But also one of the problems with the Pocket 3 is that it can be focused too much on the vlogger. And, not enough on the external world around the vlogger. Much time on the DJI Pocket 3 is focused on the person telling us his or her story. Yet, very seldom has the lens of this amazing video camera been focused outward at the world rather than inward at the vloggr. It is simple to do on the Pocket 3: one tap of the icon in the bottom right of the screen turns video of the close-up selfie to one of the outside world in front of the camera lens.

The Pocket Three plants a flag in the revolution of videography. The first 4K gimbal camera. I had been chasing this gimbal dream of stabilized video for years but could never balance any of the devices I bought and eneded up sending them all back. This is the first time all the hype has matched a product. A beautiful product. You have to register with the Chinese to activate it. Makes sense. I’m sure they have more than enough information on me. But what a gorgeous product.
And, perhaps a necessary one to record our modern world. For others to see our perspective on the world. Perhaps a docmentary film with the Pocket 3.
The major point is that the lens on the Pocket 3 has been pointed in one direction perhaps 80% of the time. Maybe it’s time to point the lens in the other direction. At least for a spell in modern filmmaking. Point Pocket 3 towards the outside world. Yet perhaps narrated by the inside world of the narrator (vlogger).
In other words, the true social media use of the Pocket 3 might be summaraized in the following Its value not in the popular “vloggers” market today. The brilliant and easy to use video in my opinion has much more success in major generational markets of grandparents and other family members posting via Pocket 3 videos. Not for inward focused vloggers. But outward focused on independent filmakers and others outside the scope of the Vlog World.
