Dr. Bernays

David Letterman: “What are we dealing with doctor Bernays?”
Dr. Edward Bernays: “We’re dealing with the concept that people will believe me more if you call me doctor.”

_______________

I don’t about you but when I was a kid I used Ivory soap to carve various things like ships and cars and figures. Now, I know why I adopted this strange habit.

A wonderful few minutes with Edward Bernays on the David Letterman Show in 1986. Bernays was founder of the public relations industry and much of the modern science of advertising. His uncle was Sigmund Freud.

A great article on Edward Bernays titled “The Original Influencer” in History Today.

  1. I too remember carving Ivory Soap. I can also remember the stinging when it got in your eyes.

A friend of mine always proclaims that he is not going to call anyone doctor unless he/she can remove his appendix.

Thanks for sharing this video. You failed to mention that the good doctor was also famous for his sauce .

  2. Yes, I too, have carved ivory soap animals , etc. Thanks for this memory I don’t remember Dr. Bernays though.
