“While hiking in the snow on a cloudy day at MT. Rainier National Park, the clouds suddenly parted and there it was, THE MOUNTAIN! I knew it was there but it is always impressive when it shows itself no matter where you are.” AT Ripley
One of my high school classmates – Sandy (A.T.) Ripley – is fortunate to live in one of the most dramatic areas of America. Living in Mukilteo, Washington he has been doing photography for over 50 years specializing mostly in the Pacific Northwest. He can combine his love of hiking with photography. As Sandy notes, “I am very fortunate to live in an area surrounded by such natural beauty and a state that has three national parks. I have been a volunteer at Mount Rainier National Park for the last eleven years but also spend time in Olympic National Park, and North Cascades National Park.”
Mount Rainier, also known as Tahoma, is a large active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest. The mountain is located in Mount Rainier National Park about 59 miles (95 km) south-southeast of Sattle. With an officially recognized summit elevation of 14,410 ft (4,392 m) at the Columbia Crest, it is the highest mountain in the U.S. state of Washington, the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous and the tallest in the Cascade Volcanic Arc.
Due to its high probability of an eruption in the near future and proximity to a major urban area, Mount Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list.
