Senator Susan Collins’ Speech
Like everything else today, the idea of greatness wears political labels. What is great to one of the political parties is base to the other party. Within this environment, is it still possible for great speeches from our political leaders?
Susan Collins, the Republican Senator from Maine, came on national television at 3:00 pm on October 3, 2018 to describe the background surrounding her vote on a critical vote in the United States Senate.
Her “Yes” vote would almost seal the elevation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. Susan Collins spoke for almost an hour describing her “Yes” vote for Judge Kavanaugh. Rather than a group of Republican talking points, her words were some of the most non-political I’ve ever heard uttered by a member of the US Senate. I watched her entire presentation, just as I watched the entire events of the Kavanaugh confirmation she described in her talk at 3:00 pm on Friday.
The Collins speech contains many call-outs to create a new unity in our nation. In the end, it was appropriate that a woman gives this speech as the last response to Christine Ford affair.
